SAMS Statement on White House Supply Chain Proposals

WASHINGTON D.C., November 29, 2023 — Securing America’s Medicines and Supply (SAMS), a multi-industry coalition of companies with the mission to strengthen the security of the United States medical supply chain, issued the following statement on the Biden-Harris Administration’s medical supply chain proposal and the White House’s policy to broaden the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) authorities under Title III of the Defense Production Act (DPA):

“We as a coalition have been saying for years, the U.S. is dangerously reliant on foreign manufacturing for critical life-saving medicines and medical supplies,” said David Sanders, Executive Director of SAMS.

“The situation is likely to get worse before it gets better unless we as a nation take bold action to address this crisis. The Biden Administration’s announcement shows they are starting to address the problem with the seriousness it deserves.”

“Whether it be critical oncology drugs or commonly prescribed antibiotics, drug shortages represent a clear and present national security threat to the United States and it’s time for the Administration and Congress to act,” said COL (Ret.) Vic Suarez, Senior Advisor to the Coalition.

SAMS supports the White House’s drug shortage proposal and encourages them to take additional actions to expand the United States’ domestic manufacturing capability for essential medicines. SAMS encourages the newly created Council on Supply Chain Resilience to implement long-term solutions to spur manufacturing in the U.S. which include broad-based federal procurement contracts to domestically produce and distribute essential medicines, the recently introduced bipartisan American Made Pharmaceuticals (AMP) Act, and other policies previously endorsed by the coalition.

SAMS membership and advisors are dedicated to working with Members of Congress and the Administration to implement these legislative solutions to improve and sustain the U.S. medical supply chain for pharmaceuticals, devices, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
