Securing America’s Medicines and Supply (SAMS) Calls for Construction Authorities to be Included in Pandemic Preparedness Reauthorization Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. — May 24, 2023 — Today, Securing America’s Medicines and Supply (SAMS), a multi-industry coalition dedicated to strengthening the security of the United States medical supply chain, implores Congress to incorporate broad construction authorities for the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) into the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) reauthorization bill expected later this year.

As the nation faces growing supply chain risks, the inclusion of broad construction authorities for ASPR in PAHPA would help begin the process of reducing our dependence on foreign manufacturing of medicines, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other critical medical supplies.

“The last six months have underscored the critical and urgent need for a secure, domestic medical supply chain,” said David Sanders, Executive Director of SAMS. “We’ve seen firsthand how dependent we are on foreign supply chains, which is a serious national security risk. By empowering ASPR with construction authorities, we can build new factories and increase domestic production of medical supplies, ensuring we are self-reliant in times of crisis.”

SAMS urges Congress to include this essential policy in PAHPA reauthorization this year.
