SAMS Applauds Launch of Bipartisan Domestic Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Caucus

March 30, 2023 — Washington D.C. – Today, Securing America’s Medicines and Supply (SAMS), a multi-industry coalition of companies with the mission to strengthen the security of the medical supply chain, applauded the creation of the bipartisan Domestic Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Caucus launched by Representatives Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL).

The caucus seeks to incentivize more domestic production of essential medicines to reduce reliance on foreign adversaries, head off potential supply chain disruptions, and ensure a steady supply of pharmaceuticals in the event of public health emergencies or natural disasters. SAMS believes that this is a crucial step towards enhancing the resilience and security of America’s medical supply chain.

“This caucus creation is a reflection of a practical and political need to strengthen our medical supply chain, now. We are committed to curing and securing our medical supply chain,” said David Sanders, Executive Director of SAMS and Vice President of Government Affairs and Policy at Coherus BioSciences. “The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of our reliance on foreign manufacturing, but these issues go far beyond the pandemic, and require a multi-agency response with input from public and private stakeholders. Now is the time to take concrete steps to address these risks to ensure that patients have access to the medicines they need.”

SAMS has previously endorsed the MADE in America Act (H.R. 3927), the American Made Pharmaceuticals (AMP) Act (H.R. 7400 / S. 3991), and enhanced appropriations for the Administration for Preparedness and Response’s (ASPR) Office of Industrial Base Management and Supply Chain. Such legislative action should be combined with small-scale, rapidly-issued public health contracts for Acetaminophen, Amoxicillin, Albuterol, and other drugs facing shortages to address critical supply chain deficiencies in the short and long terms.

SAMS encourages all Members of Congress to support the Caucus and work together to advance legislation that promotes domestic and ally pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing, strengthening America’s medical supply chain.
