SAMS Statement of Support for the Reintroduction of the MADE in America Act
April 28, 2023 – Washington D.C. – The Securing America’s Medicines and Supply (SAMS) Coalition, a multi-industry coalition of companies with the mission to strengthen the security of the medical supply chain, applauded Representatives Earl “Buddy” Carter, Darren Soto, Richard Hudson, Greg Murphy, and Carol Miller for their reintroduction of the Manufacturing API, Drugs, and Excipients (MADE) in America Act.
This bipartisan legislation will improve the domestic manufacturing ecosystem for critical medications, medical devices, and encourage a competitive, 21st-century domestic supply chain that will bolster our nation’s pandemic preparedness.
Many of the drug shortages which Americans experience today can be attributed to an overreliance on foreign manufacturers which are subject to supply chain disruptions. The MADE in America Act addresses this public health challenge by turning to proven American manufacturers. The legislation would incentivize the domestic production of critical medical products with a new tax credit that would apply to medical manufacturers operating in Opportunity Zones across the United States and its territories. Such Opportunity Zones would spur American innovation in the medical manufacturing space and address persistent supply chain shortages. The recommended tax credits would also result in the creation of thousands of good-paying jobs for Americans across the country.
“Businesses need certainty to make investments in domestic manufacturing, and the MADE in America Act is just what our nation needs in order to rebuild our strategic competitiveness,” said David Sanders, Executive Director, SAMS. “This is an excellent first step in increasing domestic production of medical supplies and a key tenet of SAMS. SAMS commends this bipartisan piece of legislation that puts American citizens, jobs, and healthcare first.”
SAMS encourages all members of Congress to support the MADE in America Act to strengthen our nation’s public health security and protect American patients.
